I thought it would be interesting to look back at my 2017 website statistics to see what my visitors were most interested in. These were the top non-fiction and fiction blogs:
Most Shared: Tinnitus-Hyperacusis Awareness Facts
I think this was popular because hyperacusis was included. And people with hyper ears have all been given bad advice on what they should do to “fix” themselves.
Most Clicked Link: British Tinnitus Association 2017 Annual Tinnitus Research Review
People said it gave them hope to see there is so much great T-H research happening every year.
Non-Fiction Most Read:
#1 Levo Tinnitus System Review
Agree or disagree with my review, people shared their experiences. They liked the factual info, including estimated cost, to help them be informed consumers instead of being treated like sales targets.
#2 E Juice, E liquid Vape Juice PG & Hearing Health
There is very little online info on hearing loss and hyper ears risk for people who use e-cigarettes and non-organic vape juice. Sales info at most vape juice stores is often misleading or wrong.
#3 Hearing Healthcare Impact of Over The Counter PSAP & Hearing Aids
The USA government deregulated the HA industry when the OTC Hearing Aid Act passed in July 2017. Leaving people needing low cost over-the-counter PSAP/HAs no consumer protection from manufacturers who don’t care their PSAP/HA performance doesn’t even meet basic sound quality standards. It’s not about a new category of HA. It’s a hearing healthcare cut. Nobody cares about crap sound quality in a retail product for mainly low income adults with HL.
#4 Safe Personal Listening Loudness Limiting Headphones for Children aged 2 to 12.
People are more and more worried about false advertising in children’s headphones that claim they are safe but can really cause permanent noise-induced hearing loss. The powers that be from governments, manufacturer associations, medical professionals and hearing healthcare advocates are taking no action to fight this.
#5 What do reported dB noise measurements mean?
People are tired of being told they aren’t capable of understanding dB levels thrown around by the media, blogs and other sources. Especially when the sources usually don’t know what reported dB they’re talking about.
Fiction Most Read:
#1 Covfefe Pie [Horror]
What is covfefe? People were curious to find out. Contains coarse language and mild sexual content.
#2 Dream Machines [Poem]
A poem about my feelings on tinnitus and my dream of silence one day.
#3 Snorkeling Romance [Humour]
What happens during romantic snorkeling adventures that Barney doesn’t find so funny?
Jan’s Favourite Blog to Write: No Empathy for People with Tinnitus.
Reaction to a “zero” star review for my horror fiction Tinnitus Terror Tales, Doctor Bell Anthology.
The spread of myths and not factual info about tinnitus, hyperacusis, hearing loss, noise trauma and coping tools has never been worse than in 2017. The worst is people still spreading the lie that there are no tests, no treatments and nothing can be done for hyper ears.
There were also highlights like the BTA Thunderclap for Tinnitus; about 700 people took part in this instant share awareness campaign that went out to more than 500,000 social media users. Can the T-H community make an even bigger Thunderclap in 2018 if BTA does one again? Aren’t there more than 700 people on social media with T-H?
I realized during 2017 that I’m fed up with trying to raise awareness. Raising the same issues that have been raised for years. There’s a Noise-Induced Hearing Loss epidemic in people of all ages. More and more people have T-H. Hearing aids don’t work. Personal listening isn’t safe. There’s too much noise pollution everywhere. Society needs more quiet inside and out. But it’s all been said before. For many many many years.
For 2018, I’ll be sharing quiet activist wins and ongoing quiet campaigns so you can see what actions are possible for communities and different levels of government. Ideas that just need people to step up and take action towards positive social change. Maybe write an email to somebody who can do something. Maybe talk to local city councils about noise bylaws. Something can be done to prevent noise pollution and prevent noise-induced HL. Something can be done for hyper ears quality of life and better hearing healthcare. I’ll keep sharing my scary or funny stories and other fiction writing as a change of pace.
Thank-you for visiting my website, reading my blogs or books, and hopefully learning something new or being entertained along the way. All the best in 2018! Jan
